For nearly 35 years, I have almost always been the only woman in the conference room. Being an engineer and having a variety of management roles, I have been seated face to face with CEOs, executives, presidents, VP's, and clients. I have also mentored countless young engineers, technicians, program managers and production workers.
Throughout it all I believe I have earned the respect of most and kept my dignity and ethics intact. There were times where I had to walk away, and times where I was asked to leave because I would not buckle to the pressure of unprincipled or downright dishonest behavior. But that was my journey and I do not regret any of it. My career has provided a comfortable living, and valued lessons along the way.
As a young engineer, it didn’t take long for me to realize that most of the job wasn’t about developing something new and scientific to change the world. It’s about forging relationships, managing conflicts and navigating the dynamic world of corporate politics. And the rules of the game are not the same for women as they are for men!
The challenges I faced in my career are still all too typical for women in STEM fields. Studies have shown that women leave tech companies two times faster than men do (ref: AnitaB.org) and a report from The Center for Talent Innovation found that 52% of highly qualified women quit their jobs in science, engineering and technology. Women often feel they cannot talk about these issues in the workplace, or they feel unsupported or retaliated against if they speak out.
That’s why I would like to help you on your journey. I can share my insight and help you focus in on what is important to you in your career.
